One thing that is always a surprise to me is when I meet people that haven’t discovered the treasure that we have in downtown Mesilla. Just in case you are one of them, I encourage you to get out to Mesilla and enjoy the small town square and a beautiful historic Catholic Church. There are several permanent shops lining the outside of the square. These local shops are open everyday during the week and sell everything from native jewelry to handmade chocolates. There is even a Billy the Kid gift shop located in the building where he was said to have stood trial for murder. The rich culture of Mesilla is felt and resonated in this square. Historical markers are all over are apparent and as you walk the square you learn so much about the people and the culture that built this beautiful town.
On Friday and Sunday afternoons you can enjoy the Mesilla Mercado. This is where local artists and farmers hold a small market on the square and sell everything from handmade soaps to chile ristras. It’s a great place to get fresh produce and if you’re lucky you’ll even find some local honey. In the summer there is also a concert series which is great to hang out and take it all in with friends or with family.
One last thing that you must enjoy are the bounty of food options. Not only on the square, but there are several great options just a short drive away, or even a nice walk if you’re up for it. Likely our most famous restaurant and also our city’s oldest restaurant, La Posta, which opened in 1939 is there too. These are also great spots to hit for dinner, and maybe follow it up watching a local band at one of the classic bars that Mesilla has to offer.
So now you know, and you just need to get up and go. No matter what your taste, Mesilla is sure to hit the spot. If you happen to go and fall in love with the area, I’d love to help you find a home closer to downtown Mesilla. Ican even help you get the best value for your current home.
