Las Cruces Day Trips
While there is more than enough to keep you busy in town, there are plenty of activities that are not too far away that you definitely don’t want to miss. Whether you are looking for something to do with the whole family or a quick romantic getaway, there is something for everyone. I’m just going to highlight a few options here that should keep you within a 2 hour radius of your home in beautiful Las Cruces, and qualify as awesome day trips.
One of the most obvious and most popular day trips from Las Cruces is White Sands, and it’s less than an hour east of home. Covering 275 square miles of desert as the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. It’s truly a unique site. Bring some sleds and enjoy a ride down the giant dunes or just relax and take in the beauty. There are even some unique camp sites if you want to stay for more than just the day and don’t mind a little hike to get there. No matter how long you plan on staying, don’t forget your camera!
If you enjoy the water then you’ll love Elephant Butte which is just under 1.5 hours north of Las Cruces. As New Mexico’s largest lake, it’s the place to go for fun on the water. You can kayak, jet ski, sail, or simply float in an inner tube. If fishing is your thing, of course you can do that too. Whatever brand of fun you like to enjoy, you’ll find it here. Just like White Sands you can set up camp and stay awhile, and if you do there is excellent golf and plenty of other outdoor activities to take in.
Want to escape the summer heat for a day? Cloudcroft might just be the perfect place for you. Also only 1.5 hours from Las Cruces as you travel north east and into the mountains. Find quaint little shops and take in the 110 year old history of this community. If you want to be a little more active, enjoy some golf, fishing, or even great mountain biking trails. Cap it all off with a photograph of you and your loved ones in authentic period costumes and you’ll never forget the trip. Then, don’t forget to go back in winter time to enjoy the snow!
So without a doubt you can always find a nearby adventure. These three locations are just the tip of the iceberg, but hopefully they give you a picture of all there is to enjoy in the Land of Enchantment without having to take tons of vacation time from work.
