Active Las Cruces: Hiking and Biking
The longer I live here the more I realize that there are so many great ways to get out and enjoy the 350 days of sun each year. A few weeks back we focused on the many great golf options, and there really are great challenging courses all over town. But what about if you want to get out with the whole family, or even just want some exercise that doesn’t involve the frustration of a fishing your ball out of a water hazard and 4 putts? Well there’s good news, because Las Cruces is a great place to hike and a great place to bike!
No matter what level of exercise the word “hiking” conjures up in your head chances are Las Cruces will be able to meet your desired level of activity. One of the more popular low key routes are the multi-use paths that stretch all over town including a trail that runs all the way from the north side of town down to right near New Mexico State University on the south side. For many residents this trail is just a short walk from their home and is a vein that runs right through the city. If you’re looking for a little more of a challenge you are just a short drive away from beautiful hiking where you can soak in the beautiful Organ Mountains. Even here you still have options. Take a hike that is light enough for children or take on changes in elevation of over 1000ft!
Like I mentioned before, Las Cruces is also an amazing place to bike. The multi-use paths are also popular with cyclists and daily commuters. Beyond this, Las Cruces has earned a Bronze status as a Bicycle Friendly Community by Bicycle Friendly America. Just like the hiking, once you take a short drive away from town the options are limitless and so are the challenges. The only downside about how great this community is for cyclists is that you’ll probably find yourself wanting more than one bike to fit all the styles and paths that are suitable for riding.
So as you can see, you’ll no longer have a good excuse for not getting out and getting some exercise. Take the family, a friend, or go it alone. You’ll be glad you did! I’d love to help you find a home that is near whatever type of recreation you are looking for, and even help you get the best value for your current home.
